Joan Shepp
Since she opened her first retail shop in 1972, Joan Shepp has built a legendary reputation not only in Philadelphia but around the world. We met her for the first time during our visit and immediately were able to confirm much of what we had heard from many fashion industry insiders for years. She has the kind of commanding presence and focus that demands nothing less than one’s complete attention.
As she walked us through her store, she talked to us about how she built much of her early success working with fashion-forward Japanese and Belgian labels. She also emphasized the importance of the right mix: stocking luxury lines with lower-priced basics.
What surprised us was her level of curiosity during our conversation. She wanted to hear a lot about us and about any fashion-related observations we had to share. She clearly still loves her job after all of these years and this is why she remains on top of this game.
